Megan Sumrell: Streamlining a 7-Figure Productivity Business
Learn how the founder of The Pink Bee built a 7-figure business on Kajabi.
Megan Sumrell is the CEO and founder of The Pink Bee, a company that focuses on time management, planning, and productivity designed specifically for women. Through courses, workshops, and planning products, Megan exemplifies her own framework having built a seven-figure business only working four hours a day. Here’s a snapshot of her success:
- Earned over $1.6M in revenue
- Built an online audience of 30K
- Grew her podcast to be a top-ranking show
The Challenge: Launching an Online Course Business
Before running her own business, Megan worked as a Quality Architect for over 20 years in the software and IT space. She was a busy working mom when one day, someone asked her what she did for fun — a question which ultimately changed the course of her career.
“I didn't have an answer because my life was in service to my job, my family, and motherhood,” she says. “Every day was a race to get everything off my checklist done, which never happened, and collapsing in bed at night. I realized I needed to change something.”
She set out to apply everything she’d learned in her career around process improvement and found a new way to plan and manage her time in a way that decreased overwhelm and created space for herself and friends and family. Megan also started speaking at conferences teaching time management strategies and realized she could turn her experience into a framework to help others.
While still working her full-time job, Megan began building her signature course, The TOP Program. She decided to create a five-day challenge within the Facebook group she created as a way to officially launch her program and digital course.
“100 women came to the challenge, and in the back of my mind I was thinking, okay, well I'm going to tell them about the TOP program and 90 of them are going to buy it,” she recalls. “Well, I sold one, but that was enough to tell me I have one person who's willing to do this.”
She tried again a few months later and her conversion rate went from 1% to 7%. She slowly adjusted and kept at it, increasing her success each time. “Now we're at a point where when I run these events, I get over 6,000 women who will come to a live event and we never convert for anything under 5 or 6%,” she says.
When she first launched her course, Megan used Teachable. She also had to piece together the other aspects of running a business by using WordPress for her website, ActiveCampaign for email lists, and Leadpages for landing pages.
Though she was comfortable using different tools due to her tech background, she hated having to piecemeal everything together to run her business. “Running all of those platforms wasn’t cost-effective from both a time and revenue perspective,” she says.
She also didn’t like how “cookie cutter” they all felt as they left little room for customization. “Having my own brand and sharing it with the world is foundational for our business here at The Pink Bee,” says Megan. “Our students love the brand and when they see hot pink or bees, they know it has something to do with us. Our brand creates a sense of community among all the women who invest in our program, so I want to be able to bring my brand into the software I’m using.”
The Solution: Simplifying With an All-in-One Solution
Not satisfied with her experience using other platforms, Megan began searching for an alternative. When she came across Kajabi, the first thing that stood out to her was that it was an all-in-one solution. Instead of using multiple platforms, Megan was able to streamline her operations and save money in the process.
“I ended up saving over $1,200 a month just in software fees by moving the entire business into Kajabi,” she says.
The Pink Bee also has a strong, identifiable brand, so finding a platform that allowed her to showcase that brand was important to Megan.
“With Kajabi, that's just very easy to do,” she says. “The entire business is branded right there on one platform, and it's just been incredibly simple and streamlined — which is what our brand is about.
Results: Building a Streamlined 7-Figure Business
Before using Kajabi, Megan spent 70% of her time managing tech, trying to integrate different tools, and helping her community members deal with technical issues with the platforms she was using.
Since moving her business onto Kajabi, Megan estimates she spends anywhere from 5-10% of her time on administrative or tech-related tasks. Now, she can focus her time on the big picture and strategic decisions rather than getting caught up in the weeds of the business.
As a result, Megan has earned over $1.6M in revenue and only works about four hours a day, five days a week, using the support of contractors to help manage the platform.
“When you use an all-in-one platform, it makes it so much easier because I don't need to find someone who knows this tool or that tool,” she says. “Instead, we can all invest in understanding one platform that we're running this business on and the entire team can jump in as needed to do things.”
Looking Ahead: Leaning Into the Creator Economy
Megan now uses nearly every feature Kajabi has to offer, from hosting The Pink Bee website, courses, and community to managing all of the funnels, landing pages, and payments through Kajabi Payments. She’s also planning on moving her branded app to Kajabi from another platform.
“I believe that Kajabi is at the forefront of building the future of the creator economy,” she says. “My hope is that 10 years from now, 10x more people are truly building businesses that they love through this platform.”
