So in today’s post, I’ll share with you six simple ways you can use Twitter to grow your email list. These are actionable steps you can follow today to connect with the people who need what you have to offer.
But before we jump into the six ways, I want to talk to you about WHY Twitter is so great for building your list.
4 Reasons Why Twitter Is A Good Tool For List Building
- Free
- Connected
- Succinct
- Viral
Let’s look at why each of these reasons is important.
1. It's Free
As the running joke goes, "Why is Twitter Free?" How is all of this entertainment possibly free?
The best reason to build your list using Twitter is that it will cost you LITERALLY no money.
All you have to do is get on Twitter and create content that people connect with. If you can do that you will all the free publicity and followers you can imagine.
From Desus and Mero's highly successful Vice TV show to the New York Times Best Selling book "White Girl Problems," if you produce content people like, opportunity will find you without you needing to spend a dime on advertising.
2. Always Stay Connected
If you are a fan of a celebrity on Facebook or Instagram, you’ll like their page or picture and maybe leave a comment that will never get responded to.
If you’re a fan of a celebrity or more importantly a market influencer in your niche and they are on twitter, chances are you can get a response.
The people who use Twitter love the connectivity it provides, so it’s not unusual to see accounts with hundreds of thousands if not millions of followers engaging in conversations with smaller accounts if not retweeting them to their audience.
The connectivity of Twitter makes it the best way to reach out to larger influencers and celebrities in your niche.
3. It's Succinct
One of the biggest problems information based businesses have is giving away too much information up front. It’s a delicate balance, you want to give away enough to be helpful and entice the prospect to click on your links but not enough that they can go do it themselves. Because Twitter is limited to 140 characters this is not an issue you run into.
Another great reason to use Twitter to build a list related to the idea of being succinct is the time-savings. Writing a blog may take hours, and even Facebook posts can take 15-30 minutes. Because you only have 140 characters you can dash off a tweet quickly and gauge it’s response before expanding into multiple tweets or a “thread’ as the cool kids call them.
4. Highly Viral Nature
As evidenced by our current United States President Twitter is highly VIRAL. In fact in my conversations with other social media gurus, we estimate that around 80% of all memes start on Twitter, before ending up on Instagram or Facebook where they go mainstream.
The same can be said for viral phrases that have worked themselves into every day speech. More than any other platform, Twitter can make you an overnight sensation for better or worse, and is a great way to get free publicity or exposure.
Now that you understand EXACTLY why you should be using Twitter to build your list, let’s get into the nuts and bolts and talk about the 6 Ways You Can Use Twitter To Build Your List.
6 Ways To Use Twitter To Build Your List
1. Link Everything To An Opt-in Page
The first thing you need to do is create an opt in page with a “free gift” to incentivize Twitter users to join your list.
(The great news is that you can easily build a opt-in landing page inside Kajabi and link it to your Twitter.)
It could be an infographic, audio interview, video, report, or series of emails, but you need to answer the magical question in your prospect’s mind “What’s in it for me?”
Once you have your free gift landing page set up, it’s time to link it to EVERY part of your Twitter account.
That means you need to have a graphic made that explains your free gift offer for your Twitter header, your offer needs to be in your twitter bio, and anywhere else you can squeeze it in, including pinned tweets which we’ll talk about in just a moment.
Without a great offer and an optimized landing page, you will not be able to build your list from Twitter. If you haven’t already set up your Twitter account, landing page, free gift offer, and autoresponder then stop reading this article and do that immediately!
2. Use Multimedia Tweets
If all you’re doing on Twitter is tweeting out links to your offer or spamming random people who are tweeting about similar services, you’re doing it wrong.
I could cite all the statistics that say that video, memes and pictures outperform pure text tweets but I’m instead going to respect your intelligence enough to assume you already know that.
Popular memes are a great way to go viral within your niche especially if you’re the first one to use that meme inside your particular niche.
3. Used Pinned Tweets To Drive Traffic To Your Landing Page
About 2 years ago Twitter debuted the idea of Pinned Tweets or tweets that you can have permanently displayed at the top of your account’s page.
These pinned tweets are a great way to build your list, because you can use them to constantly display your offer to anyone who visits your page without having to retweet your offer every day, which can alienate your followers.
Your Pinned tweet should be your offer presented in a fun or interesting way, it should not be a straight up sales pitch.
You can use Twitter Analytics to figure out what your best performing tweets are and then use that information to craft and test your pinned tweet for maximum persuasiveness.
4. Curate Great Content
An easy way to get more followers and more engagement is to spend a few minutes every day curating and sharing great content with your followers.
Remember that one of the big appeals of Twitter is that it is personal; so don’t be afraid to share things that are little random or weird as long as they are workplace appropriate.
Sharing pictures of cute kids, puppies or kitties, or hysterical (non-offensive) memes is a great way to build trust with an audience. If you can show your audience that you will only share things that are relevant and interesting to them, they’ll eventually start sharing your account with their followers.
5. Get Active With Hashtags (#) and Trends
On the left side of your Twitter desktop setup and in the scrollbar on your mobile you’ll see what’s trending or trends. This shows you what is currently popular and being discussed on Twitter.
I like the desktop version the best, because as you can see in the screen shot, you can see approximately how many people are discussing each trending topic.
You want to make sure that EVERY day you send out a tweet or two related to trending topics or hashtags as this will result in new users seeing your tweets when they search the same way.
You don’t need to be an expert or offer some outlandish opinion, in fact making jokes and keeping things light is one of the best ways to use trends and #s but you do want to get involved in the conversation. If you don’t use hashtags in your tweets or send out some on trend tweets daily, you’re missing out on a great way to build your list and your followers.
6. Tag Others Influencers and Comment On Their Stuff
One of the easiest ways to grow your followers and build relationships with other people in your industry is to tag other influencers or respond to their tweets.
As I mentioned earlier in this article, it is MUCH easier to get a response from an influencer or niche celebrity on Twitter than anywhere else.
So you want to make sure you take advantage of this by tagging influencers or celebrities when you post great content.
An easy way to do this is to ask for an opinion on something you’ve done like a video or blog post.
Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get a response right away, some of these bigger accounts have account managers or don’t respond for 3-5 days to @s.
It might take 2-3 tries but getting an article or video you’ve created retweet or shared with an audience of 80,000 to 1 million followers is more than worth the effort.
Also be sure to pay attention to the conversations that influencers are having and whom they are having them with. You can see whom influencers follow and get a good idea of what kind of things they are interested in sharing with their audience.
Recapping How To Use Twitter Effectively
Whew!
That was A LOT of information and because I want to make sure that you actually take this stuff out there and implement it in your business, rather than just talk about it, I want to re-cap to make sure you wring every last drop of value out of this post like a wet towel.
First we discussed how Twitter created a two-hour news cycle and how that attracted those 62% of people who get their news from social media.
We discussed the 4 reasons Twitter why is such a goldmine for building your list, which are:
1. Twitter is Free. While you can advertise on Twitter (which is a whole separate subject for another blog post) you can build a list on Twitter for literally 0 dollars.
2. Twitter is connected. The chances of connecting with an influencer or niche celebrity are the highest on twitter.
3. Twitter is efficient. Because of the 140-character limit twitter doesn’t take much time.
4. Twitter is viral. Lastly Twitter has the highest incidence of virality.
After that I walked you through 6 specific ways that you can use Twitter to build your email list:
- Link EVERYTHING to an opt-in page.
- Use Multimedia Tweets
- Use Pinned Tweets to drive traffic to your landing page
- Curate Great Content!
- Get Active with trends and hashtags
- Tag and comment on niche influencer’s tweets
Now you know exactly why Twitter is such a great resource for list building and how to get started!
One last thing I want to leave you with is the idea that you don’t need to do all 6 of these items in order to be successful.
Don’t overwhelm yourself up front. Just start out with 2-3 of these items and in no time you’ll see your list and follower count blossom!
