Motherhood is full of unique challenges.

Juggling that and a career?

If that's you hats off because you are a superhero. I mean it.

But what if there was a way to create your own successful career without sacrificing time with your kids? What if every day was a vacation and you made money doing what you love?

Today, we have a very special Kajabi Hero story for you. Today's Hero decided that she wasn't going to sacrifice the time she wanted with her kids for her career.

Tamsen Horton was a tax attorney that became a mother. She couldn't stand the thought of leaving her newborn son. She gave up a career with the IRS, but that wasn’t the end of her journey.

By leveraging her skills and knowledge, she created her own career online. The best part?  She did it on her terms from the comfort of her own home spending every single day with her kids.

Here’s what I’ll cover in the post today.

  • How Tamsen built a successful career with the help of Kajabi.
  • Why going to college, getting a degree, and racking up debt to succeed in life may not be the best option for you.
  • And how moms can know their worth, believe in themselves, and start their career today on their terms.

This post is going to dive into Tamsen’s story, and I hope it also encourages you to believe in yourself. I want you to know that if you have a dream, you can create your own career online and radically change your families lives. With or without a degree!

How A Full-Time Mom Built a Successful Career for Herself Online

Kajabi Hero Tamsen and Family

Tamsen left her corporate job and went to law school later in life. She was looking for a higher income level.

So, she went into law school, started her career, and very quickly realized that the life of a tax attorney wasn't worth the income.

When she was pregnant with her first son, she had a job lined up at the IRS. Everything was mapped out. The plan was to have her baby, take the summer off, and start her new job at the IRS.

But as soon as she held her child, she knew in her heart that she could never leave him.

She didn't care about all the debt from law school. She didn't care that she had a high-paying job lined up. All she cared about was being there for her son.

So she plunged straight into full-time motherhood without looking back.

As time went on, she realized that a lot of her friends didn't have wills or any arrangements set up for their kids if they weren't in the picture anymore.

As an attorney, this was a no-brainer for her. She knew how important it was to make sure her kids were taken care of if she wasn't around, but no one she knew was setting these things up for their kids.

On top of all that, there was a huge problem with how these things were done.

Traditionally, families would set up an appointment, go into a law office, and fill out the forms with their attorney.

But it was so impersonal and inconvenient.

If you’re a mom, you know how hard it is to even go on fun outings with kids. Going to a stuffy law office isn't one of the easiest things to do.

Setting up childcare. Shuffling the routine and schedules you already have set up for your kids. It's tough.

But the problem didn't stop there.

The actual appointments are so impersonal. Preparing a life for your kids if you aren’t there is a highly emotional and hard thing to think about.

Most attorneys didn't handle this issue with sensitivity. To a lot of them, it was just another appointment.

Imagine sitting there in a fancy office with someone you don't know. They tell you to look at these papers that will map out your child's future without you, and it's all about filling in the blanks.

Tamsen wanted a way for that to be easier. More than that, she wanted it to be personal. She wanted to help coach these moms through this difficult decision.

So, instead of meeting up with mom’s in an office, she met with them over Skype. She sat down in her own home and coached parents through this process with understanding and compassion.

She didn't care if they had kids running around. Her own little ones were there with her too. She didn't care if the parents had to meet up with her while holding a fussy baby. She treated them with respect and understanding because she’d been there.

All she wanted to do was to serve these moms; meet them where they were. She coached them through the process of how to deal with all the thoughts and emotions that come up when they had to think about not being there for the rest of their kids’ lives. She helped them ensure that their kids would have the best life possible no matter what.

She found her perfect niche with the perfect audience who needed her the most.

But she still had a bigger vision.

As hard as she tried, she couldn't make this vision happen on Wordpress. In 2015, when she found Kajabi, she knew it was the answer. She knew that Kajabi was the perfect platform to give her the freedom to make her big vision a reality.

Her first product was called My Kid My Plan.

She helped parents write a series of letters for their kids; letters for each milestone, pivotal event, and even heartbreak.

The plan was to give these things to your children in person, but if something happened and you weren't there for them; your kids would still have a piece of you for the rest of their lives.

From there, Tamsen’s business has only expanded beyond what she ever imagined it could be.

She doesn't trade her time for money. She is there with her kids every single day. And she modeled their lifestyle based on the philosophy: vacationing life.

She lives life to the fullest with her family, and Kajabi has made all of this possible for her.

Now, she is passionate about helping people fall in love with Kajabi, get their legal stuff in order, and share their passion with the world.

She even wrote a book about their journey: Easy As PB&J: Share What You Know. Make Money Doing It.

Tamsen has inspired and impacted the lives of so many moms (plus all of the members of the Kajabi team.) She's helped so many people follow their dream, and she didn't sacrifice her family or the life she wanted for them to do that.

You may be reading this thinking:

Of course, that worked for Tamsen but how can that work for me? I don't have a law degree. I don't have all the skills that she has. How is it possible for me to make my own way in the world? My own career and the lifestyle when I have kids to look after? That’s crazy!

It's a fair question. One that I can relate to more than you know. But are you willing to look at things from a different perspective? I want to help you see what is possible for you, whether you have a degree or not.

What if the Cookie-Cutter Way to Succeed in Life Isn't the Right Way for You?

Are you brainwashed?

When it comes to degrees, your career path, and doing everything the “right” way, most people tend to think that you have to go to school, get a piece of paper, and start a career. That’s success. A piece of paper. Oh, and debt. Lots of crazy debt.

We are brainwashed as a society to believe this is the only way to succeed.

For a lot of mom’s staying at home isn't even an option no matter how badly they want that. And if you're a driven woman who wants a successful career, that means you can't be with your kids as much as you’d like. Right?

What if there's a better way?

What if you don't need the degree or the high-paying job to provide for your family, love what you do, and live life on your terms?

Because even if you do get a degree in the career you really want, what price are you really paying?

It’s hard to truly live life on your terms when you are someone else's employee. You have to shuffle, schedule, and mold your life around someone else's timeline and priorities.

Tamsen thought the life of an attorney was the career she wanted. But even with all the student loans, effort, and time she put into that, she realized it wasn’t what she truly wanted.

At Kajabi we have seen so many people, so many moms, create their own career online without a degree.

It worked because they had a passion they wanted to share with the world, and they weren’t afraid to put their knowledge out there.

You don't have to go to school, accumulate a crazy amount of debt, and take a job that sucks the life out of you and your family to succeed in life.

Degree or not, you can build your own business online on your terms. (Even if you have kids. Leah built her music career with 5. Plus she homeschooled all of them too!)

Moms, It's Time You Start Seeing Your True Value and Worth to This World.

Raising kids is not for the faint of heart.

Just caring for one child is a full-time job. It requires serious dedication, effort, and energy. As a mom, you deserve a medal for everything you do every single day.

And if you're a guy reading this, just trust me on this. You don't know what mom-struggle is until you’ve had to convince a strong-willed two-year-old that throwing food at the table next to you in a restaurant isn’t socially acceptable.

Through all the craziness of everyday life, the idea of starting your own business and all the effort that that requires seems about as easy as climbing Mount Everest in scuba gear.

Then there’s the mindset problem...

A lot of times the problem isn't, do I have a passion for something that I want to share with the world?

Usually, the only thing holding you back is you thinking to yourself, I don't have anything valuable to share with the world.

Know your worth. Know that you have everything inside of you to live your dreams. Believe in yourself and your gifts.

You had a life before you had kids. (Even though that can be so hard to remember.) What experiences or knowledge can you use to create your own business?

And since you became a mom, you have learned so many valuable lessons.

  • Hobbies.
  • Skills.
  • Experiences.
  • Even knowledge that you've accumulated from past or current job(s) can all be profitable business ideas for you!

And you can build a business around all the diaper changes, meals, and nap schedules. You don't have to leave your home. You don't have to leave your kids.

Moms, you are powerful. And I honestly think that if you were to believe in yourself…

Wow.

There is no limit to what you can accomplish.
