We all know that getting things done is the real “secret” to the success of any online or offline business. And as the entrepreneur and the one mainly responsible for driving the results of the business, it’s even more true for you.

Yet as they say, what’s common knowledge isn’t always common practice.

It’s been proven time and again that with the rise of technology, so too has come the rise of digital distractions, assaulted attention spans, and people unable to focus.

Looking for some thoughts on productivity? Check out this talk from Brendon Burchard, one of the top knowledge creators in the game:

Overcoming Information Overload

From texts to tweets, news to notifications, to emails and everything in between, there’s no question that our individual productivity is under a complete attack. Considering some of the most successful companies right now are profiting from their ability to make us addicted to staying glued to their platform, it’s safe to say this is an important issue.

In this article today, we’ll tackle productivity hacks specifically for the digital marketer.

As you know, running an online business requires you to be “plugged in” and comes with its own unique set of circumstances, challenges, and hurdles to overcome.

#1: Instead Of Stopping, Just Start Somewhere Else

Often times getting started on writing an email, blog post, or some other piece of marketing content is the hardest part. Ask any professional writer and they’ll tell you just write something. Anything. Getting started and “coloring the page” is always better than staring at a blank screen.

But then once you do get started it’s easy to get stopped at certain spots. But instead of stopping, try just starting somewhere else. Don’t give up and get up from your work. Just hit the spacebar a few times and start on the next section or idea that’s fresh in your mind. It’s that simple.

Doing this will ultimately help you stay in the flow, get more done, and produce a piece which has a more uniformed voice and tone.

#2: The Myth Of Multitasking

If you haven’t already heard this before, it’s time you hear it now. Multitasking is a complete myth. Neuroscience has proven it. What appears to be multitasking is actually just our brains quickly switching from one activity to another. Just like a computer does without us ever even noticing. That is...until we do notice.

Haven’t you ever complained about how your computer “lags” when you have too many windows open or you’re trying to do too many things at once? Well your brain, our brain, everyone’s brain works the exact same way.

So while we might “believe” we’re getting more done through multitasking...we’re actually bogging down our system. We’re lagging and the only virus to blame is us and our inability to simply focus on one thing.

So just remember that our normal start, stop, start, stop routine is incredibly rough on your productivity. Instead of saving time, it spends it. Instead of being efficient, it’s scattered. Like trying to take a math test on little sleep.

Focus on one task for a certain period of time or until completion. Your productivity and mental health will thank you for it.

#3: Music Is Good, Lyrics Are Bad

Most digital marketers enjoy turning on some tunes while they create their next online course, million dollar membership site, or email their list about their newest coaching program. And we’re all for it! But here’s just a tip you might want to try…

Instead of listening to music with lyrics, try listening to music without them! Lyrics (unless you know them so well and completely tune them out) can actually make your brain work. Unconsciously or consciously you try and sing along, understand the meaning of the verse, or predict the next word. This takes you away from the creativity needed right in front of you.

Have you ever been writing something while listening to music and accidentally inserted a word form the song into your content? We know we have. So give ambient music a shot and see if it makes a difference! If it doesn’t, you can always switch back to some calming AC/DC.

#4: ‘No No’ Your Notifications

Do you remember what it’s like to work on something uninterrupted for 45 minutes to an hour? Most don’t because of nonstop notifications. Texts, email alerts, Slack, Skype, and every social platform are begging for you to open them. “Ignore me!? How dare you!”.

But if you want to instantly increase your productivity as a Knowledge Commerce entrepreneur, you have to exercise some leadership in this critical area. Instead of reacting to every ding which arises, what if you created blocks of time without them.

Sure sometimes you need to be available. We get that. You’re the one who can make that call.

But do you really need to have your texts popping up while you’re trying to figure out what to name your next online course? What if you just turned everything off, hid your phone upstairs under your bed, and only opened the single window you need to be working in? Think that would help?

If turning off notifications, your phone, and signing out of social media won’t do it for you, you can always try the next step and use some sort of website blocker. Simply Google “time control websites” and you’ll see all kinds of options pop up that you can try.

The main takeaway here is to ‘create’ your productivity, not ‘react’ to the dings, rings, and non stop tiny needs of others. At least for a 30-60 minute block.

#5: Leverage Automation

If you’re reading this then we can assume two things: 1) you’re involved in online business in some way, shape or form, and 2) you know about the Kajabi platform. Those are important because they both provide you with an instant way to increase your productivity.

A few months ago we released one of our biggest features to date. Kajabi Automations.

Now what you once had to use multiple software or hours of your manual time, you can do in just a matter of clicks. Plus you can set up your automations once, and leverage them again and again over the lifetime of your business.

From automated email campaigns, tagging subscribers, or creating action sets based on customer behavior (like whether they clicked a link in an email or watched a video in a course)...you can leverage technology to get more done in less time.

Take a look under the hood of your Kajabi platform and you’ll see all the mindblowing automations it’s capable of. It’s something you can do today which instantly makes you more productive tomorrow.

#6: Save Time Using Proven Templates

Trying to create from scratch, with no inspiration, or nothing to model or template can be one of the most time consuming and frustrating experiences as a digital marketer. Luckily this is an industry where there’s a proven template for just about anything.

And you don’t have to look any further than the blog you’re reading right now. In these posts, you’ll find entire layouts for everything from email campaigns and sales letters, to video scripts and product launches. If it relates to selling your knowledge online, we most likely already have a template for it.

You can also look inside Kajabi! Years ago you had to custom code from a blank page. You had to imagine and program every feature you wanted without much help whatsoever. Now Kajabi has completely changed that.

At the push of a button, you can create entire blueprints for funnels, websites, email campaigns, even your digital products. Want to create your first online course? We have an entire template with that already loaded with fill-in-the-blank copy.

With this blog and the Kajabi platform, creating, launching, and scaling your Knowledge Commerce business has truly never been easier.

#7: Imperfect Action Beats Perfect Inaction

As digital marketers and online business owners, “perfection” is your ultimate enemy. Nothing will suck more time, money, and fulfillment away than trying to get things perfect. Can’t send that email till it’s perfect. Can’t launch that course till it’s perfect. Can’t make sales till it’s all perfect.

Yet in our digital world, it actually works the exact opposite.

The imperfect action takers happen to be the ones who reap the greatest rewards. The ones courageous enough to just launch even though they know with another year of tweaking their site could be a little better. Ultimately it’s those willing to simply act who consistently outperform those who procrastinate in the name of perfection.

Do you want to double check and do your absolute best to make sure everything’s set up properly? Of course.

Do you want to pour your heart and soul into your digital product and deliver as much value as you possibly can? Without question.

But waiting until everything's “perfect” is like a mirage in the desert. It doesn’t exist. You’ll never arrive. Everything is in constant change. And the business owner and marketer you are today won’t be the same tomorrow.

So act today, act now, and start serving as many people as you can from right where you are. This mentality of “imperfect action beats inaction” could be the greatest productivity hack of all time. Go and put it to use today!

Your Online Business Needs You

Becoming successful selling courses and digital products is more about consistency and focus than anything else. If you can follow just a few of the hacks listed above, you’ll immediately begin getting more done and tilting the odds in your favor.

Here’s just a quick review of the 7 productivity tips we discussed today:
