Have you ever felt like your brain was working against you?

You want to start your own business, but it seems like no matter what you try, you hit a brick wall when it comes to getting started.

The thing is: You are not alone. So many aspiring entrepreneurs grapple with this issue, and so many successful business owners were exactly where you are right now.

There is a way to get unstuck.

We know because that's exactly what our newest Kajabi Hero does for a living.

Dr. Mckayla is a psychotherapist who helps people change their brains with her online courses.

She was sick of traditional means of cognitive behavioral talk therapy when she worked in addiction recovery. The relapse rate she saw didn't sit well with her, so she started searching for better ways to actually help people change, not just manage the problems in their lives. Dr. Mckayla wanted to deal with the root of all of those problems for real, lasting results.

Over the course of her career, Dr. Mckayla discovered EMDR and her patients saw real results from the therapy.

If you aren't familiar with EMDR, I'll give you a quick explanation.

EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing.

Through back and forth hand movements, left to right sounds like clicking or beeps, or even left to right physical tapping on hands or shoulders, an EMDR therapist simulates the back and forth eye movement we experience during REM sleep. This helps people process traumatic memories and move past the emotional and mental hang-ups the memories caused.

For example, if you suffer from PTSD and a certain memory triggers extreme feelings, EMDR can help you process the memory and move past it. You still remember the memories but, it does not cause any intense negative feelings or emotions to affect you in the present.

After seeing the impressive results from her therapy, Dr. Mcayla decided to take her knowledge online with her courses.

She's helped people remove their limiting core beliefs, get unstuck, and even put a stop to emotional eating to lose weight.

If you are reading this thinking: "Well, I'm not a neuroscientist. I haven't been a psychotherapist for ten years. This doesn't apply to me."

The key here I want you to take away from this blog post is that no matter who you are, Kajabi is all about sharing your knowledge.

Everyone is good at something. Everyone knows a lot about at least one thing. And whether it's something as simple as budgeting or you've been a doing marketing all your life, you can package your knowledge into a course with Kajabi. You can help other people and make money while you're doing it.

So today we are going to talk about some tips and tricks inspired by Dr. Mcayla's interview that will help you in your own business.

Why You Need To Take Care of Yourself As An Entrepreneur

Let's take a few minutes to talk about something we haven't covered much here before:

The importance of self-care in your business.

From day one you need a good self-care policy as a business owner. And one of the biggest parts of having a good self-care policy is getting enough sleep. And this is actually one of the easiest mental blocks to fix.

REM sleep is crucial for your body to function how it should. And just one night of disrupted REM sleep will throw off your whole internal clock. You may think of REM sleep as the dream state of your sleep cycle, but REM is about much more than dreams.

When you are in REM sleep your brain is processing all the information, emotions, stress, and memories you experience in your life. That's why EMDR is so effective for Dr. Mcayla's students.

And when you don't get enough REM sleep, it will affect every area of your life. Here's a snapshot of what inadequate REM sleep will do to your mind and body.

  • Impairs your memory.
  • Impacts decision-making skills.
  • Lowers your stress threshold.
  • Stunts creativity.
  • And even increases blood pressure.

Imagine all of these issues and throw in trying to run a business on top of all that. Use a sleep cycle calculator to learn more about REM sleep so you feel better rested.

Can you see how not getting enough sleep sets your business up to fail?

You need to get enough sleep.

And I know how hard it is when you're starting your own business. You put in a lot of work and burn that midnight oil to get things taken care of. But in reality, if you don't take care of yourself, it will be that much harder to run a successful business.

If you are burned out, stressed, and having a hard time juggling everything in your life right now, take a close look at your sleep. If you aren't getting enough, make it a priority, and you just may find that your business starts running a lot smoother when you are well rested.

Once your mind gets the rest it needs, you can sort through all the mental baggage that is holding you back in your business.

Separate The Lies From The Truth In Your Mind

Our brains are very good at deceiving us.

The mind controls how we see the world. If you aren't careful, it can even lead you down the wrong path in your business if you don't know how to tell what's truth and what isn't.

I am a firm believer that most of what holds people back from starting their own business is in the mind.

You can have all the tips, tools, and strategies you need, but if you are looking at all of it through a distorted mental filter, it will be hard to make it all work for you.

What are some lies that interfere with starting your own business?

Lie: You need a good job to make it in life.

There has been a huge shift in how people make money. Entrepreneurs have been around since forever, but with the internet, and all of the resources out there today, you can make money from home. And you can make more than you ever could being someone else's employee.

Even when you do set out to start your own business, this mentality lingers in the back of your mind. It seeps over to affect your business.

Just because our parents made a living one way, does not mean it is the only way.

And that may also mean you will get a lot of concern and skepticism from the people who know and love you. We are conditioned to see a regular 9-5 job as a source of security and stability, but in the grand scheme of things, you never know when you'll wake up one day, and your job isn't going to be there.

Giving up your dreams for that false sense of security and stability may be limiting your income and your freedom.

Anyone can run a successful business online. Notice I did not say that it's easy. Entrepreneurship is not a cake walk. But if you work toward your goals you can do this.

Lie: I have to be an expert before I can start my own business.

What is an "expert" anyway?

You ever stop to think about that?

When have you done enough or when do you know enough to be qualified as an expert?

I hate to tell you, but a lot of these experts today started out just like you and me. They had a passion or skill that they wanted to share with the world, so they went out there, and through a lot of trial and error, they made their knowledge available to other people.

You do not have to be an expert to start a business.

You just have to be teachable and willing to make mistakes as you learn along the way.

I see it every day.

I see people who had an idea, went with it, and built a successful business for themselves like Kendra Wright.

I've seen people fail more than once before they finally found something that worked like Bob Heilig.

I've even seen people change their niche or career path altogether like Felicia Ricci.

Even Dr. Mcayla did not set out to do what she does now. She originally wanted to be a musician. The only reason she got into psychology was to learn about herself. She decided to make into a career for herself after the fact.

Lie: You have to pick one career and stick with it for the rest of your life.

Entrepreneurship isn't a one size fits all kinda thing. Your business can follow a hundred different paths that all might work for you.

I'm not knocking anyone who has been at the same job their whole lives whether they are business owners or employees. This mindset may make a lot of sense if you invest thousands of dollars into a business to get it up off the ground, but there is another way to achieve the freedom, and lifestyle you want from life.

That's one of the things that is so great about an online business. You have more freedom to try out different things until you find the best fit for you. Plus the barrier to entry for most online businesses is so low; you won't lose a ton of money if something doesn't work out for you.

You are not restricted to one thing for the rest of your life. And if this has been holding you back from starting your own business don't let it restrict you anymore. Give yourself permission to keep trying out different methods, niches, or business models until you find the best fit for you.

These are just a few of the lies we buy into. And the list could go on and on. But it is so important that you identify these lies your mind holds on to. Until you do that, you cannot move forward. You can't make progress when you are letting these lies influence your thoughts and behavior.

Embrace Change Even When You Are Afraid Of It

We crave change.

Especially if our life isn't headed in the direction we want it to go. We sit and daydream about how we want our lives to be different than what they are right now.

But sometimes, even when we know things have to change we resist and even sabotage the change before it can happen.

Maybe you are a single mom who loves to write. You work more than one job to make ends meet for your family, but you are still scared to get online and start pursuing a freelance writing career.

Maybe you are sick and tired of sitting in your cubicle day in and day out, daydreaming about sharing your passion for graphic design, but you still haven't taken any steps to change your situation.

Or maybe you've already gotten your feet wet online with a blog in your favorite niche, but haven't given it your all and ran it like a business.

Why do we do this to ourselves?

We are afraid of what we do not know, and we are deathly afraid of things that are beyond our control.

We fabricate a false sense of security by eliminating things that might make us uncomfortable or lead to failure. And when it comes to starting your own business, this instinct to maintain your control and security could stop you in your tracks before you even try.

Even if you have a job or life that you hate, at least it is known to you. It's familiar, and even though it's not really what you want, you've figured out how to operate in this space that you've been living in for any length of time.

Starting your own business isn't something you can comprehend. You are scared of failure, but you may even be scared of success just as much because it isn't familiar to you.

We are afraid of the shame, rejection, humiliation, and pain of failure. We are afraid that success will alienate us from friends and loved ones or maybe even change who we are for the worse. So to avoid all of these negative feelings and consequences that may or may not even happen we just throw out the change altogether, so we don't have to experience it.

We don't even start.

Our fear of loss and rejection keeps us stuck, but you can do something about it.

You are cheating yourself out of such great things in life when you let your fears and need to be in control call the shots.

Change, rejection, loss, and pain in life are going to happen no matter what you do. So why not take a leap of faith and chase after your dreams?

Because if all of these painful things are possible so are the great things in life: acceptance, happiness, and success.

Kajabi is all about equipping you with the platform and tools you need to maximize the positive and set you up for success while giving you everything you need to combat the negative and overcome failure.

The time to start is now. Take care of yourself, ignore the lies holding you back, and face your fears so you can change your life, like Dr. Mcayla and all of our Kajabi Heroes have before you.
